90-120 ml spicy ginger beer (recommended: Q Ginger Beer or Reed's Strong Ginger Beer)

5 ml bar spoon of grenadine

Directions

Fill high ball glass with ice. Pour in rum and lime juice (to taste) and stir to chill. Top with ginger beer (to taste) and lightly stir to incorporate. Hold a spoon upside down directly over drink, and slowly pour the bar spoon of grenadine over upside down spoon - the grenadine should NOT mix, but fall to the bottom of the drink creating a beautiful sunburst effect going from red on the bottom to translucent yellow on top. Drink and enjoy!

Want to Learn Some History

The captivating tale of the Dark and Stormy takes us back to Bermuda, where the Gosling family, rooted in British heritage, played a role in the story of this legendary cocktail. Bermuda, a British colony, was no stranger to the darker chapters of history, including the transatlantic slave trade. The Gosling family's rise in the rum business during the 19th century was undoubtedly intertwined with the economic landscape shaped by colonization and the exploitation of labor. As for the ginger beer, it connects us to the spice trade routes and the cross-cultural exchanges born out of colonialism. The roots of ginger beer, a product of the Caribbean, mirror the complex historical tapestry of flavors that came together in the Dark and Stormy, reminding us that even a seemingly simple cocktail carries the echoes of a complicated past. Sipping on a Dark and Stormy becomes not just a celebration of taste but also an acknowledgment of the historical forces that shaped its ingredients and the families who brought it to life.
